More Adoptable Dogs
Pyrenees and Akbash don’t fit well into every environment, and sometimes they need a second chance to find their best life! We can’t pull all of these dogs into our sanctuary - so we do our best to support anyone trying to re-train or re-home their pup. This page is for dogs currently in a home, but looking for a new one.

COTTON
Cotton is an approx 1.75 yr old Akbash, weighing 110 lbs. Cotton came us as a puppy maybe 8 wks old. We pulled him from a high kill shelter in the ventral valley of California. This shelter also has a problem with parvo. At the time we werent sure exactly what breed Cotton was - but he was cute and kind of looked like a Labrador. Cotton needs a large yard to patrol and will be happiest with another dog who will play with him. Cotton ended up coming down with parvo 3 days after leaving the shelter. Luckily he recovered thanks to our vets. As he grew and his tail started to curl we realized he wasnt a Labrador. We reached out to a Great Pyrenees rescue who told us he wasnt a GP either but an Akbash. I had to google that!!
The first picture that popped up looked exactly like Cotton! Being a Labrador Rescue we did try to find adopters for Cotton. However people looking at a Lab Rescue site don’t understand that a LGD is nothing like a Lab. So thank you Unega Mountain Dog Rescue for posting this boy.
Cotton is still a puppy, a big puppy. He’s goofy, loves tug of war, to be chased and doesnt know his own size. He will always squeeze you out of your space whether on the couch or in bed (if you let him sleep w you). He also enjoys being outside and taking in the scenery. You never know who or what might come by that needs to be chased off. He’s a pleasure to walk on leash but is reactive to most other dogs. Although he doesnt like all dogs he does have many dog friends and goes to day play and train at Canine Purpose in Loomis CA. Cotton enjoys car rides and sometimes expects to receive leftovers if you’ve gone to lunch! Contact Cathy 925.303.0509
Jaeger
!!IN DANGER OF BEING EUTHANIZED!!
Jaeger is an amazing Great Pyr mix - 75% pyr/25% Mastiff. Four years old, neutered, some training. Good with kids, dogs, cats. He's been mostly an indoor pet, and just wants to be by his people all the time. But he loves playing around outside with my other dog and throwing his big stuffed animals around.
He's aggressive to some other dogs while on a leash but loves most other dogs when he can meet them freely. He has fought with other dogs on occasion, has bitten another dog once and he's snapped at humans trying to take food away, so he gets his food away from the other dog at home... he's fine with that but is a risk to small children taking bones, etc. from him. He currently lives with a pitt mix, a cat, and two teenagers, and he is just a big lovebug... just wants cuddles all day.
I have been trying to rehome him for a year now and have had no luck finding him the right family. I was supposed to just be a foster home...

ZARA
Hello, My name is Zara. My owners have passed away unexpectantly 5 months ago & I have been taken in by a friend, but HOA won't allow me to stay. My friend thought I had a place to call home twice, but because I am big and hairy, they said I was too much work. I am 4-5 yrs old and 27 inches tall from my paws to my back. I have been a house dog all my life. I use doggie doors & get along with every human I meet & every dog I come across. I am told that I am 30 lbs overweight and get called “chunky monkey”. I would love to be in a home with another dog companion unless I can have all your attention. I have not been around livestock, and I am not sure how I would do. I am not a working Pyrenees, I am a companion pup who wants me to be a part of their family. If I don't get enough exercise, (my morning and afternoon walks or play time with my human) I will try to sneak out the front door to take myself for a jaunt around the neighborhood. My other bad habit is that if you leave food unattended on the counter, I will steal it as it tastes better than dog food. I am a big hairy girl but I know there is someone out there that will be my new forever family and allow me to be in the air conditioning with you. By the way, I love going for car rides too!

ROSIE
*Temperament: Rosie is a beautiful, silly, playful, mischievous young Great Pyrenees. Rosie is loving and affectionate with both adults and children that she knows.
She is incredibly smart and picks up on things quickly, especially when paired with yummy treats.
She is spunky, sassy, and opinionated and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face every day.
*Rosie is:
-Potty trained
-Crate trained
-Has lived with children ages 1-11 years old
-Has lived with large dogs
-Knows sit
-Fully vaccinated, spayed, heartworm negative, and has been given a clean bill of health by the shelter veterinarian.
*Energy Level: Rosie has a moderate energy level, and is extremely smart and wants to work her brain. Rosie would thrive in a home where she is given appropriate outlets for her energy such as:
-obedience and trick training
-nose work -agility/dog sports
-swimming
-hiking
-food/toy enrichment puzzles
*Special Notes:
-Rosie would thrive in a home where her humans can read and respect her body language and signals, help to teach her how to trust people, and meet her mental and physical stimulation needs.
-Rosie loves her people, but also loves her chill time in her kennel or on her bed taking a nap.
-Rosie also thrives when she is given the opportunity to be around and play with other respectful, energetic dogs that are her size or bigger.
-As long as she is not overwhelmed, she is likely to be hospitable to visitors, especially when paired with yummy treats. She has, at times, taken offense to forward behavior from strangers, and in these times she can be quick to speak her mind. She does not intend to be rude, but she simply wants to make sure that she and her loved ones are safe.
-A fenced yard, or just a large outdoor space would be ideal for Rosie. If there is not a fence, just make sure to keep her on leash so that she is secure on the property.
*Overall: -When Rosie gets to know you, she becomes extremely wiggly and will approach and will nudge hands and legs for petting and affection. Rosie also approaches children that she knows in the same way, making her a great companion for families and individuals.
-Rosie is the happiest when she is playing outside with her doggy friends, especially when there is a pool/water involved.
-Her coat is long and beautiful, and she has the cutest fluffy perked up ears.
*Previous homes behavior summary: -In the previous adopter and foster homes that Rosie was in, she displayed some fearful and defensive behavior towards strangers. The behaviors included alert barking, attempting to retreat, and not wanting to approach some new people. Typically, the introductions were done through the backyard outdoor fence. The owners attempted to have the strangers hand feed her treats, but since Rosie was feeling conflicted and fearful already she would not take the food and would continue to alert bark and try to back away.
-In the shelter, she has done well with treat and retreat with new people. We: have the new person sitting/facing sideways from Rosie, not reaching towards her or attempting to lure her to them, and just have them toss high value foods behind and then a little bit in front of Rosie, and back and forth for awhile. Doing this has helped to build her
confidence with meeting new people, and is starting to help her learn that she can choose to move away when she’s uncomfortable.
-She has also displayed some adolescent, frustration related behaviors including demand barking at adopters when she was not allowed access to go outside, or when they were attempting to physically force her out of her kennel and she air snapped. In the shelter, Rosie has responded really well to luring and guidance using treats and a drag leash.
-There has been a recurring theme in Rosie’s homes where she is being labeled as stubborn, tantrum throwing, untrainable, etc. Whenever she’s been brought back and we have spoken to the adopters and fosters, we have found that in these situations Rosie is giving clear communication about how she is feeling, and what she is comfortable and uncomfortable with, and these signals are continuously being missed and/or ignored, and people are continuing to push her and not providing any support or incentive, such as food rewards or really any positive reinforcement. She is still so young, and desperately just needs a steady, predictable, fair person who will give her the time and chance to learn how to be the great dog that she can become.

george
George was saved from South Korea in 2022 when he was approximately two years old. His original owner left him tied up outside on a short chain, all alone in the middle of nowhere, with very little food or water. Eventually, locals were able to negotiate his release and got George into our care.
After extensive vetting, training, and care, George was then adopted to one of our previous adopters, who had a female Golden also rescued by us. George lived with them for a year and a half before behavioral issues presented that the family was not able to work through such as food and resource guarding with the Dad who worked out of the home. We feel he was protecting the Mom he was home with all day which did lead to a one-time bite resulting in his surrender.
We, of course, took George back right away and transported him from Florida to San Diego, CA, where he’s currently at the training facility. George has been nothing but an angel with everyone he has met and has shown zero signs of aggression or unmanageable behavior. He was transported across the USA with zero issues, his driver wanted to instantly adopt him and would have if he wasn't on the road 24/7!
Like most GP, George is easily misunderstood by those not familiar with the breed, especially if he is not working or busy. We found out that his adoptive family was not walking him or giving him the mental stimulation we feel he needed, which is a bad idea for any dog, let alone a Guardian Breed like George. We are confident that with the right environment and leader, this sweet boy will shine!
Our dream home for George is one that loves and understands his breed, someone that lives an active life that will keep George thriving and happy.
Overall, George is an angel. He loves chasing balls, bubbles, and shadows. He is big and strong, but there is not a mean bone in his body, and his behavior is not aggressive. George is scared of thunder and still gets a bit upset with loud noises, such as big trucks or motorcycles so he would likely not do well in a city environment, but he is doing a lot better after consistent work with our trainers.
George has been with our professional trainers for a few months now, but we are eager to get him into a home all of his own! If you would like to be considered for George, please get in touch today so we can assess if your home could be the right one for him!
Our group is heavily focused on rehabbing dogs from trauma so please only apply if you understand that George has come from a traumatic past and that he cannot be quit on ever again! He has already lost 2 families and that cannot happen ever again. If you would love to love this sweet boy forever, please apply on our website below!
