OWNER SURRENDERS & REHOMing

More Adoptable Dogs

Pyrenees and Akbash don’t fit well into every environment, and sometimes they need a second chance to find their best life! We can’t pull all of these dogs into our sanctuary - so we do our best to support anyone trying to re-train or re-home their pup. This page is for dogs currently in a home, but looking for a new one.

buddy

This guy is at Española Humane, an open admissions shelter in northern New Mexico.

Buddy, Male, Great Pyrenees/Anatolian mix, 1 yr, 85 lbs

Buddy has been tested with other dogs (male and female) and does well—interested and quite tolerant even of puppy shenanigans. He’s also a sweetheart with people

Buddy came to them as an owner surrender. Owner is moving out of state and is not able to take Buddy with him where he is staying. He says Buddy is very friendly, up to date on vaccines, has no medical concerns. He seems house-trained. As far as we’re aware he was a pet rather than a working dog so would likely need training if transitioning into that role.

Interested folks could apply to adopt on our website www.espanolahumane.org

Thanks so much for considering!

TETON

Teton is a tall, creamy white Akbash searching for room to roam and a homestead to protect. At 135 pounds, Teton comes with typical guardian-dog breed traits including forming a close bond with his people and property. He's a fox chaser, coyote deterrent, and couch warmer. No cats, please. Teton is about 6 years old, neutered, and up to date on his vaccinations: DAPP, Rabies, and Bordetella. Learn more about Teton via shelter@pawshelpspets.org or call us at 208-354-3499. gracie

Meet Gracie!

We are trying to find Gracie a new forever home.  We are in the process of relocating my 85-year-old father to Tampa to live with us and unfortunately, as part of this life changing event, Gracie cannot make the move with my Dad as I have children who are allergic to dogs.  This is very hard on my Dad, but he understands.  It is also not the best timing as he just lost his wife of 30 years, so Gracie is all he has left of her memory and finds comfort in her during this difficult time.

Gracie is a 5 ½ year old Australian/Pyr/Poodle mix.  She is a super friendly, sweet girl.  She is great with kids, strangers, and other dogs.  She loves to cuddle, play, and be by your side as much as she can!  She is spayed and all her vaccinations are up to date.

Please help me in finding a great home for Gracie!

COTTON

Cotton is an approx 1.75 yr old Akbash, weighing 110 lbs.  Cotton came us as a puppy maybe 8 wks old. We pulled him from a high kill shelter in the ventral valley of California. This shelter also has a problem with parvo. At the time we werent sure exactly what breed Cotton was - but he was cute and kind of looked like a Labrador.  Cotton needs a large yard to patrol and will be happiest with another dog who will play with him. Cotton ended up coming down with parvo 3 days after leaving the shelter. Luckily he recovered thanks to our vets. As he grew and his tail started to curl we realized he wasnt a Labrador. We reached out to a Great Pyrenees rescue who told us he wasnt a GP either but an Akbash. I had to google that!!

The first picture that popped up looked exactly like Cotton!  Being a Labrador Rescue we did try to find adopters for Cotton. However people looking at a Lab Rescue site don’t understand that a LGD is nothing like a Lab.   So thank you Unega Mountain Dog Rescue for posting this boy.

Cotton is still a puppy, a big puppy. He’s goofy, loves tug of war, to be chased and doesnt know his own size. He will always squeeze you out of your space whether on the couch or in bed (if you let him sleep w you).  He also enjoys being outside and taking in the scenery. You never know who or what might come by that needs to be chased off. He’s a pleasure to walk on leash but is reactive to most other dogs. Although he doesnt like all dogs he does have many dog friends and goes to day play and train at Canine Purpose in Loomis CA. Cotton enjoys car rides and sometimes expects to receive leftovers if you’ve gone to lunch!  Contact Cathy 925.303.0509

RUE

Jaeger

!!IN DANGER OF BEING EUTHANIZED!!

Jaeger is an amazing Great Pyr mix - 75% pyr/25% Mastiff. Four years old, neutered, some training. Good with kids, dogs, cats. He's been mostly an indoor pet, and just wants to be by his people all the time. But he loves playing around outside with my other dog and throwing his big stuffed animals around.

He's aggressive to some other dogs while on a leash but loves most other dogs when he can meet them freely. He has fought with other dogs on occasion, has bitten another dog once and he's snapped at humans trying to take food away, so he gets his food away from the other dog at home... he's fine with that but is a risk to small children taking bones, etc. from him. He currently lives with a pitt mix, a cat, and two teenagers, and he is just a big lovebug... just wants cuddles all day.

I have been trying to rehome him for a year now and have had no luck finding him the right family. I was supposed to just be a foster home...

STELLA

She’s friendly and extremely smart, learning all about life in a short period of time. She's come from a shut down, almost feral dog to liking people and trusting them more and more in a short time. She's doing great at obedience and will sit, lay down, wait and touch on cue and focuses her attention on you when training. She wants to please and works for both treats and praise. Stella is also great on leash and loves long walks. She loves water and is learning how to play with toys. Once she trusts you, she loves getting hugs and kisses!

While she does still get scared about new things, she's working her way through those things quickly now. Stella would do great in a home where she can be part of the family, preferably an active one. She'd do great as a running companion. She likes children but a home with kids over 10 is probably best. Stella has never lived in a house, so she would need to be contained for times when you can't be with her as she will chew. She is not a dog that you can just leave out in a yard. She will dig or jump her way out. Stella likes male dogs more than female, but has always lived with her sister, so a female friend isn't out of the question.

She has seen cats, but never been with them but has never shown any aggression towards one. Stella has never been tested on livestock, so while she is an LGD, she would need to be trained to do the job and we don't know if she has the natural instinct needed for the job.

FLUFF

She is a very smart and independent girl who is learning to trust people and has come a long way in a few short months. She is learning obedience but she isn't at the level her sister is as she isn't as food/praise motivated. Miss Fluff isn't a fearful dog. She meets new challenges easily but she needs someone who will take the lead and show her the best way to handle things instead of her choosing how to react. Miss Fluff is friendly but will always be a bit more aloof and protective than her sister Stella and is more like an Anatolian in temperament.

Miss Fluff loves water and is learning how to play with toys. She is learning obedience and she's excellent on leashed walks. Miss Fluff has never been tested on livestock, but she has more natural ability. A working home would be considered if you are committed to training her to do the job, preferably with another trained LGD to help her.

Miss Fluff is good with most dogs with the proper introduction but she has not been tested on cats yet. She would do best in a calm home with adults that will reward positive behavior. She would need to be contained when you're not able to watch her until you can trust her not to chew things.

Like Stella, she is not a dog you can just leave in a yard. She's good at finding weaknesses in fencing and will escape. She comes back, but she enjoys the challenge! Miss Fluff is a dog that if you spend the time for her to trust you, train her positively and push her slow but steady, she will end up being an amazing partner for the right person.

ZARA

Hello, My name is Zara. My owners have passed away unexpectantly 5 months ago & I have been taken in by a friend, but HOA won't allow me to stay. My friend thought I had a place to call home twice, but because I am big and hairy, they said I was too much work. I am 4-5 yrs old and 27 inches tall from my paws to my back. I have been a house dog all my life. I use doggie doors & get along with every human I meet & every dog I come across. I am told that I am 30 lbs overweight and get called “chunky monkey”. I would love to be in a home with another dog companion unless I can have all your attention. I have not been around livestock, and I am not sure how I would do. I am not a working Pyrenees, I am a companion pup who wants me to be a part of their family. If I don't get enough exercise, (my morning and afternoon walks or play time with my human) I will try to sneak out the front door to take myself for a jaunt around the neighborhood. My other bad habit is that if you leave food unattended on the counter, I will steal it as it tastes better than dog food. I am a big hairy girl but I know there is someone out there that will be my new forever family and allow me to be in the air conditioning with you.  By the way, I love going for car rides too!

winter

"Hi everyone, I have a male 4-year-old husky/yellow labrador mix dog. Unfortunately, I have recently become a survivor of domestic abuse, and I am currently going through the court process against my abuser. I am also a law student who currently has a 12-hour per day workload. Due to my circumstances and my injuries, I am unable to properly take care of my dog. As much as it kills me, I need to either rehome him or provide him with a temporary foster situation while I recover. He was adopted in Arizona and has received training from myself and formal training by a company named K-9 dog training.

He knows commands such as sit, lay down, stay, off and paw. He does really well in car rides as we have gone on various long trips and moves. He loves playing fetch, going on long walks, hiking, camping and cuddling. He’s been trained on how to walk on a leash, but he does pull, however it is manageable. He is also house trained; he does not pee inside the home, he only marks when he is being walked. He is extremely smart, and food motivated; he is receptive to learning when given the time for training to reinforce the behavior. However, he does have a history of fear-based aggression, specifically nipping male individuals he is unfamiliar with entering the home or his crate space(he loves being in his crate). He had a history of male abuse when I adopted him and unfortunately my abuser has also recently hurt him. This can be managed by ensuring his soft muzzle is on or he is crated when people enter the home. When it comes to dogs he does play rough, so, I would ensure he plays with dogs with similar roughhousing play.

The ideal person should be someone who is active, without children, has a backyard, and it would be even better if the person is knowledgeable on dog training and behavioral tendencies."

ROSIE

*Temperament: Rosie is a beautiful, silly, playful, mischievous young Great Pyrenees. Rosie is loving and affectionate with both adults and children that she knows.
She is incredibly smart and picks up on things quickly, especially when paired with yummy treats.

She is spunky, sassy, and opinionated and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face every day.

*Rosie is:
-Potty trained
-Crate trained
-Has lived with children ages 1-11 years old
-Has lived with large dogs
-Knows sit
-Fully vaccinated, spayed, heartworm negative, and has been given a clean bill of health by the shelter veterinarian.

*Energy Level: Rosie has a moderate energy level, and is extremely smart and wants to work her brain. Rosie would thrive in a home where she is given appropriate outlets for her energy such as:
-obedience and trick training

-nose work -agility/dog sports

-swimming
-hiking
-food/toy enrichment puzzles

*Special Notes:
-Rosie would thrive in a home where her humans can read and respect her body language and signals, help to teach her how to trust people, and meet her mental and physical stimulation needs.
-Rosie loves her people, but also loves her chill time in her kennel or on her bed taking a nap.
-Rosie also thrives when she is given the opportunity to be around and play with other respectful, energetic dogs that are her size or bigger.
-As long as she is not overwhelmed, she is likely to be hospitable to visitors, especially when paired with yummy treats. She has, at times, taken offense to forward behavior from strangers, and in these times she can be quick to speak her mind. She does not intend to be rude, but she simply wants to make sure that she and her loved ones are safe.
-A fenced yard, or just a large outdoor space would be ideal for Rosie. If there is not a fence, just make sure to keep her on leash so that she is secure on the property.

*Overall: -When Rosie gets to know you, she becomes extremely wiggly and will approach and will nudge hands and legs for petting and affection. Rosie also approaches children that she knows in the same way, making her a great companion for families and individuals.

-Rosie is the happiest when she is playing outside with her doggy friends, especially when there is a pool/water involved.
-Her coat is long and beautiful, and she has the cutest fluffy perked up ears.

*Previous homes behavior summary: -In the previous adopter and foster homes that Rosie was in, she displayed some fearful and defensive behavior towards strangers. The behaviors included alert barking, attempting to retreat, and not wanting to approach some new people. Typically, the introductions were done through the backyard outdoor fence. The owners attempted to have the strangers hand feed her treats, but since Rosie was feeling conflicted and fearful already she would not take the food and would continue to alert bark and try to back away.

-In the shelter, she has done well with treat and retreat with new people. We: have the new person sitting/facing sideways from Rosie, not reaching towards her or attempting to lure her to them, and just have them toss high value foods behind and then a little bit in front of Rosie, and back and forth for awhile. Doing this has helped to build her

confidence with meeting new people, and is starting to help her learn that she can choose to move away when she’s uncomfortable.
-She has also displayed some adolescent, frustration related behaviors including demand barking at adopters when she was not allowed access to go outside, or when they were attempting to physically force her out of her kennel and she air snapped. In the shelter, Rosie has responded really well to luring and guidance using treats and a drag leash.

-There has been a recurring theme in Rosie’s homes where she is being labeled as stubborn, tantrum throwing, untrainable, etc. Whenever she’s been brought back and we have spoken to the adopters and fosters, we have found that in these situations Rosie is giving clear communication about how she is feeling, and what she is comfortable and uncomfortable with, and these signals are continuously being missed and/or ignored, and people are continuing to push her and not providing any support or incentive, such as food rewards or really any positive reinforcement. She is still so young, and desperately just needs a steady, predictable, fair person who will give her the time and chance to learn how to be the great dog that she can become.

george

George was saved from South Korea in 2022 when he was approximately two years old. His original owner left him tied up outside on a short chain, all alone in the middle of nowhere, with very little food or water. Eventually, locals were able to negotiate his release and got George into our care.

After extensive vetting, training, and care, George was then adopted to one of our previous adopters, who had a female Golden also rescued by us. George lived with them for a year and a half before behavioral issues presented that the family was not able to work through such as food and resource guarding with the Dad who worked out of the home. We feel he was protecting the Mom he was home with all day which did lead to a one-time bite resulting in his surrender.

We, of course, took George back right away and transported him from Florida to San Diego, CA, where he’s currently at the training facility. George has been nothing but an angel with everyone he has met and has shown zero signs of aggression or unmanageable behavior. He was transported across the USA with zero issues, his driver wanted to instantly adopt him and would have if he wasn't on the road 24/7!

Like most GP, George is easily misunderstood by those not familiar with the breed, especially if he is not working or busy. We found out that his adoptive family was not walking him or giving him the mental stimulation we feel he needed, which is a bad idea for any dog, let alone a Guardian Breed like George. We are confident that with the right environment and leader, this sweet boy will shine!

Our dream home for George is one that loves and understands his breed, someone that lives an active life that will keep George thriving and happy.

Overall, George is an angel. He loves chasing balls, bubbles, and shadows. He is big and strong, but there is not a mean bone in his body, and his behavior is not aggressive. George is scared of thunder and still gets a bit upset with loud noises, such as big trucks or motorcycles so he would likely not do well in a city environment, but he is doing a lot better after consistent work with our trainers.

George has been with our professional trainers for a few months now, but we are eager to get him into a home all of his own! If you would like to be considered for George, please get in touch today so we can assess if your home could be the right one for him!

Our group is heavily focused on rehabbing dogs from trauma so please only apply if you understand that George has come from a traumatic past and that he cannot be quit on ever again! He has already lost 2 families and that cannot happen ever again. If you would love to love this sweet boy forever, please apply on our website below!

WILMA

Wilma is a good-natured and friendly dog! She loves everyone, regardless of age or gender. This delightful 2-year-old Great Pyrenees mix is incredibly friendly, affectionate, and eager to shower love upon everyone she meets. Wilma is a well-behaved girl who walks perfectly on a leash and gets along well with most other dogs and even cats. However, she has a tendency to chase ducks and chickens, so a home without those would be best.

She is ready to go and can be transported anywhere to get to you!

PLEASE CONTACT MARY ANN AT 307-871-1975

hi-tone

Just about two, Hi-Tone was found running as a stray. He has been at the City of Burley Animal Shelter for over a month now and is looking for his new home!

He is great with all other dogs, loves people, and he’s bit shy off leash. He is a gentle giant with a very mellow attitude. Hi-Tone looks to have traits of a guardian breed and his DNA test is pending to confirm. He has not been neutered yet.

If Hi-Tone is of interest, please reach out!

Finn

Finn was previously adopted as a puppy from outside Unega and was adopted again by a young woman. Now, she can no longer keep a dog his size in her college apartment and needs to find Finn a home!

Finn loves cats and has lived around many. He is neutered and well vetted. He is a sweet guy who gets along well with most other dogs.

If Finn is of interest, please reach out!

deku

Deku is an approximately two year old possible Anatolian mix. He loves a good tennis ball and is a hunk of a guy. He is neutered, chipped, and up to date on his vaccines.

He is currently the longest resident of Walla Walla’s Blue Mountain Humane Society at 223 days !!

Deku needs a home and is ready to take on the world by your side; hiking, jogging, on the couch.

Make an appointment to meet Deku at 509-525-2452

APPA

Appa is a Great Pyrenees. He is about 3 years old. Appa wasn’t treated well in his early life and his current family took him in to get him out of a bad situation and nurse him back to health. He is doing much better now and on the search for his forever family! He is a handsome boy and has a calm, low energy and affectionate nature.

Located in SE Connecticut, but transport may be available. Please contact 860-304-3120 with questions/interest in Appa!

Bones

This is Bones. He is a Great Pyrenees mix. He is 12 months old and through no fault of his own is looking for a home. He is good with cats kids and other dogs. He is a little nervous about meeting new people and doing new activities. Having a fenced yard is a must and it needs to be over 4 ft as he can jump them. He would prefer to sleep in bed with you and doesn’t know what a crate is. We have started crate training with him as he has no house. He has had his puppy shots and will be fully updated before going to his new home. Once he is comfortable in his environment he is pretty laid back and a sweetheart.

Berk

Berk is a 2.5 year old neutered purebred Kangal. He is gorgeous, athletic, agile, big (100 lbs!), and a lovely mover—he floats. Berk is excellent with humans; both adults and children. He loves time with people and has done well with border collies and a mini dachshund. He’s great on a leash, comes when called, and is very food motivated. He has a very soft mouth and is gentle when taking treats and does pills well.

Berk can also be great at getting out. Where he is staying currently has covered and underground dog fencing. But ideally an owner would have 6-foot fences, especially if he can see traffic, people, other dogs, etc. Adequate fencing is important for this guy and he would thrive in rural areas.

Because of Berk’s history and his tendency to play with stock, Berk would thrive under an only dog household and as a house dog himself. He would love to protect and guard his yard and be loved on with lots of attention, but no work-work for this big guy. He is easily trainable, and is ready to live out his best life in a new home!

If Berk is of interest, please reach out!

Please reach out with questions about any of our adoptable dogs!
